Performance testing, explained

A performance test shows which zones you should train in. There are several methods. They differ in effort, location and level of detail:

INSCYDMetabolic profile from performance data: oxygen uptake, lactate production, fat and carb burning. Often possible without a lab. Used by Blueline Sport.
Lactate testStep test with small blood samples from which thresholds are derived. A classic in the lab or on the track.
SpiroergometryMeasures breathing gases under load and therefore maximal oxygen uptake. Very precise, usually in a clinic or lab.
FTP testA simple bike test over 20 minutes or as a ramp. Good for getting started with a power meter.
Swim analysisTechnique on video. In triathlon often the biggest gain for the least effort.

For comparison: lactate tests and spiroergometry in Berlin usually cost around €160 to €310, paid privately.

Coaching FAQ

Does coaching work if I don’t live in Berlin?
Yes. Coaching runs online: you get your training plan in TrainingPeaks, and you stay in touch by message and call. If you live in Berlin, the larger packages also include training together with Jan.
Is coaching suitable for beginners?
Yes. Jan coaches everyone from first fun runs to long distance. Especially at the start, a plan helps you avoid overload and still make fast progress.
How do I get my training plan?
Through TrainingPeaks, the platform many pros use. You see every session with goal, duration and intensity, and you can connect your watch so Jan sees how it went.
Do I need a sports watch or a power meter?
A watch with heart rate is enough to start. A power meter on the bike helps but isn’t required. Jan adapts the guidance to what you have.
Do I need a performance test?
No, but it makes your training more precise. Blueline Sport uses INSCYD, which determines values such as maximal oxygen uptake, lactate production and fat burning, from which your training zones are derived.
What’s the difference between INSCYD, a lactate test and spiroergometry?
A lactate test measures lactate in the blood under increasing load and derives thresholds. Spiroergometry measures breathing gases and therefore oxygen uptake. INSCYD calculates a metabolic profile from performance data, often without a lab. All three deliver training zones; they differ in effort, location and level of detail.
What does coaching cost?
According to its website, Blueline Sport’s packages cost €120, €200 or €280 a month (as of October 2026). For comparison: online triathlon coaching in Germany usually costs around €80 to €240 a month. Contract terms are agreed directly with Blueline Sport.
What happens if I’m ill, injured or stressed at work?
Then the plan is adjusted. That’s exactly why you have a coach and not an off-the-shelf plan.
Can companies book Jan for an event?
Yes: as a short talk, keynote or kick-off, for example to start a company challenge. Send date, place and number of participants to hallo@pulsundpause.de.
Who is my contract partner?
Coaching is offered by Blueline Sport, owner Jan Höing. Puls & Pause presents and refers it. Details are in the legal notice.
